Vietnam has access to advanced technology to develop green economy

IN A GLOBALIZED AND INTEGRATED WORLD, in order to develop a green economy, Vietnam needs access to foreign knowledge, experience and advanced and modern technologies, including America,” said the Minister of Science and Technology.

On the afternoon of May 17 (the morning of May 18, Hanoi time), the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the University of California Berkeley held a seminar on “Developing policies to attract high technology to transform to a green economy and create a green economy.” digital in Vietnam”. The event is within the framework of the Prime Minister’s business trip to the US.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat said that climate policy and environmental protection are of great interest to the Government of Vietnam, considered a key task to contribute to rapid development and development. lasting. At the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), Vietnam committed to achieving carbon neutral emissions by 2050. To achieve this goal, Vietnam is gradually shifting its energy structure to towards increasing the proportion of renewable energy, reducing fossil fuels.

He said, Vietnam has determined that the proportion of renewable energy sources in the total primary energy supply will reach 15-20% in 2030 and 25-30% in 2045, corresponding to the proportion of electricity of renewable energy in the total energy supply. Nationally produced electricity is about 30% in 2030 and 40% in 2045.

In addition to policies on climate and environmental protection, the Government of Vietnam is also developing and implementing policies to develop the digital economy and digital society. In which, the proportion of the digital economy will reach 20% of GDP in 2025 and 30% of GDP in 2030.

It can be said that the policy of greening Vietnam’s economy always needs to go hand in hand with the process of national digital transformation, especially in the field of energy and environment with the application of advanced technologies from AI, Blockchain, etc. IoT… in building an intelligent technology ecosystem that meets international standards,” said the leader of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

According to the Minister, to achieve the above goals, science, technology and innovation are identified as the key solutions. Vietnam’s policies, mechanisms and solutions over the past time have been focused on improving the business environment, promoting creative startups, developing industries, fields and businesses on a strong application platform. the achievements of science and technology, especially the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Currently, Vietnam has promulgated 8 specialized laws on science and technology. The startup ecosystem has formed and developed quickly and diversified, including 79 technology and business incubators, 40 startup accelerators, 138 universities with no startups. creative space for students starting a business; 291 industrial parks, 04 national high-tech parks…

In a globalized and integrated world, in order to develop a green economy, Vietnam needs access to knowledge, experience and advanced and modern technologies from foreign countries, including the US. “, said the Minister of Science and Technology.

Need an energy storage policy

Speaking with the topic of technology and strategy for green energy growth in Vietnam, Mr. Chris Payton (Vietnam Gas/ Energy Science Group) said, just 5 years ago, the issue of renewable energy was very simple, just revolved around replace fossil fuels with wind and solar energy. But now it’s a matter of infrastructure, including power transmission. This must be managed through policy.

According to him, energy storage is something that Vietnam can do very quickly in terms of policy. For example, in the state of California, in 2021, there are more than 220 licensed solar power projects, of which 95% are solar power projects with storage. While 5 years ago this number was very low.

There are many types of energy storage technologies such as hydroelectricity, batteries, compressed air, storage in the form of heat, etc. Each type has different economic and commercial applications. The two most common types are accumulators and batteries. These two types are different but complement each other. Battery-powered electricity storage is an area where proactive policy can rapidly change Vietnam’s energy landscape and environment.

“The battery-powered storage system can be installed into an existing network without taking up a lot of space. It can also be deployed in multiple locations in the network such as power generation, where end users, before or after the clock…” he said.

He said it is possible to deploy electricity storage systems in many places throughout the network, but centralized control will be better. Accordingly, a nationwide power management system is very important. “If this system is established, it is possible to create a carbon emission management system, to help manage carbon emissions, to encourage industrial parks to do well and to prevent areas that are not. can collect national statistical data,” he said.

According to Chris Payton, energy storage will power solar power and encourage new large-scale projects in the future. But to ensure the stability of the grid, private incentives should not be left to chance. “The power grid must be funded by the central government and managed by the central government because it is strategic in nature,” he stressed.

At the seminar, there were also representatives of Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park Management Board, Vietnam Office of Science and Technology in San Francisco; professors, scholars, researchers from the University of California Berkeley, University of Texas, Stanford University; Vietnamese and American enterprises such as Vietnam Gas Group; Energy Science Group; TerraScale Inc; Mancef…

At the end of the program, Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park Management Board signed a memorandum of understanding recognizing the intention of TerraScale Inc Company (US enterprise) in researching and investing in green and sustainable energy and data projects. at Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park.

This is a network project of low carbon data centers with high security, essential data processing network; project on battery system for energy storage on grid scale, project on software for carbon counting, project on network of safe communication system, including satellite communication, infrastructure for development field of AI and IoT for diverse and humanitarian applications such as healthcare, agriculture and smart city development.
